THE VIETNAM WAR The Vietnam War was a war fought over decades in the mid to late 20th century. It is considered to be connected to the Cold War, and many of the causes of the conflict have roots imbedded in the fear of the spread of Communism that was at the front of the Cold War. Ho Chi Minh, the leader of North Vietnam, wanted independence for Vietnam and a Communist-run government. The American policy of containment was strong during this time, and the U.S. joined South Vietnam in their dispute. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. Much of the dispute between the US and Viet Minh was that both nations had strong feelings of Nationalism and refused to back down. The United States invested in Vietnam, but the changes in presidency caused changes in their policy over time. The Vietnam War is notorious for the atrocities against Vietnamese citizens and the level of violence that was reached during the war. The Vietnam War was not supported by many Americans because of the number of deaths that were happening overseas. Some historians credit this to the fact that it was the first war to be brought into people’s homes through television. War protests were held all over the country; a significant amount of them took place on university campuses. Unfortunately, in the case of the Kent State massacre, protesters were killed and innocent bystanders were mortally wounded as well. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved.
