Study Guide Phoenicia Social Studies, Grade 8

PHOENICIA: (1000-300 BC) Phoenicia was an ancient civilization in Asia that was made up of a number of city-states. The most prominent city-state in Phoenicia was Carthage, a city that is still a part of Asia. For the most part, the Phoenicians were a polytheistic culture and celebrated many gods and goddesses. Phoenicia was well known for the extensive trading network they established during their rise as a civilization. The Phoenicians depended on their ability to extract purple dye and create beautiful textiles as one of their biggest exports. Other key exports were glass and wood. The Phoenicians are also famous for their contributions to the alphabet that we use today. Due to their constant and widespread contact with other civilizations, the Phoenician alphabet was spread throughout the world. It is the first alphabet to use symbols to represent sounds. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved.
