CAUSES OF THE CIVIL WAR About the Causes of the Civil War In the 1800’s, America was expanding and gaining new territories. The issue of slavery was everywhere, and there was much conflict over whether or not the new territories should be slave states or not. The Kansas-Nebraska Act allowed new territories to decide for themselves whether they would allow slavery, and in turn caused the citizens of the northern states to become very upset. This Act escalated the conflict around slavery in the U.S. The Abolitionist Movement also played a role in the start of the Civil War. The opposition to slavery was growing stronger in the northern states and the southern states began to ban this type of thought from their schools and literature. Slavery was not the only reason for the Civil War. Arguments regarding the intention of the Constitution and where powers to govern lay were also a reason for the struggle between the North and South. The Industrial Revolution also led to different attitudes in the northern states, and economic growth only increased in some areas the tension. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved.
