THE PROGRESSIVE MOVEMENT What is the Progressive Movement? In the beginning of the 1900’s, the American middle class wanted to see a change. The Progressives thought that the government should become involved with the people and help them have better lives. During the Progressive movement, citizens found out how poorly people were being treated and tried to change this. Progressives asked for help from the government and they agreed. Amendments were passed to help citizens. Women’s Suffrage and Prohibition were two of these amendments. One goal of the Progressives was to gain better working conditions. Many factory workers were being treated poorly and wanted to change this. They succeeded by creating labor unions. Labor unions helped the workers come together and tell their employers what they wanted, which often included safe working conditions. Some workers went on strike if they did not get what they wanted. The Progressive Movement helped many people. Women, men and children all benefitted from the Progressives. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved.
