NOTABLE PEOPLE INDEPENDENCE What is a Notable Person? A Notable Person is a person who contributes to a cause in a special way. During the American Revolution, many people contributed on both the British and the colonial sides to the fight for freedom from Great Britain. Some of these Notable People are well-known: Thomas Jefferson was the main author of the Declaration of Independence. Patrick Henry was the Patriot who became famous for his speeches against British taxation. One of his famous lines was, "Give me liberty or give me death." King George III was the leader in Great Britain when the Declaration of Independence was signed. Other Notable People are not as well-known: Phillis Wheatley was an African-American woman who became known for her poetry. The Hessians were a group of German soldiers hired by the British to fight against the colonists. Thomas Paine was the Englishman who wrote the booklet "Common Sense " to persuade the colonists that they needed to be free from Great Britain's rule. The actions of these Notable People added to the end result: freedom from Great Britain for the colonies and the formation of a new nation, the United States of America. © Copyright NewPath Learning.
