EVENTS LEADING TO THE REVOLUTION What actions led to the American Revolution? Actions by both Great Britain and the American colonists led to the American Revolution. Actions of the British: 1. Parliament raised the colonists' t axes to pay for the costs of the French and Indian War. All products printed on paper, like newspapers and playing cards, were required to have a stamp attached to them. This law was called the Stamp Act. 2. The Townshend Acts were also passed. These laws put taxes on lead, glass, paper, paint and tea. 3. When British soldiers shot and killed five colonists who were throwing snowballs at them, it was called the Boston Massacre. 4. The law that closed the port of Boston was called the Intolerable Acts. 5. Actions of the Colonists: 1. To protest the taxes, the colonists stopped buying products from Great Britain. This action is calleda boycott. 2. The Sons of Liberty destroyed the houses of the people collecting taxes for Great Britain. 3. The Daughters of Liberty helped with the boycott of British products. 4. To protest the tax on tea, the colonists dumped chests of British tea into Boston Harbor. This action became known as the Boston Tea Party. Finally, in 1774, a meeting of colonists was held to try to improve the colonists' relationship with Great Britain. This meeting was called the First Continental Congress.
