NATIONAL HOLIDAYS, SONGS, LANDMARKS, AND SYMBOLS What are National Holidays? National Holidays are those days set aside to honor people or events important in the history of a country. Some of the holidays celebrated in the United States of America are: • Washington's Birthday is the holiday set aside to honor our first President. • Flag Day, celebrated on June 14, is the day set aside to honor the flag of the United States. • Labor Day, celebrated on the first Monday of September, honors all workers. • Columbus Day is the holiday that honors the discovery by Europeans of America. • Thanksgiving Day is the day set aside to give thanks for our blessings. What is Our National Anthem? A song that honors a country is called an anthem. "The Star-Spangled Banner" is our national anthem, or patriotic song. It was written during the War of 1812 to honor the American flag that flew over Fort McHenry. Francis Scott Key wrote "The Star-Spangled Banner." What are our Nation's Landmarks? Our nation's landmarks are buildings and places important to all Americans. Landmarks like the Jefferson Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, and the Statue of Liberty are owned by all Americans and are symbols of our common values and history. © Copyright NewPath Learning.
