LANDMARKS What is a Landmark? A landmark is any prominent object on land that can be used in determining location or direction. A memorial is a special kind of landmark which was built to honor and remember a person, a group, or event. World Landmarks • Great Wall of China - longest structure ever built, it can be seen from space • Mt. Everest, between Nepal and Tibet, the highest mountain in the world is 5.5.miles high • Mt. Fuji - Japan- 3 volcanoes • Stonehenge, Britain - monolithic rocks stand in a huge circle • Tower of London – stone tower built to hold prisoners in medieval England • Big Ben - London clock tower • Eiffel Tower - wrought iron 300 m high © Copyright NewPath Learning. Landmarks in the United States • Lincoln Memorial - a huge statue of Abraham Lincoln seen sitting in a chair in Washington, D.C. • US Marine Memorial - Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington, VA • Liberty Bell - was rung to announce the signing of the Dec. of Independence in Philadelphia. It has a wide crack in it. • Independence Hall - Philadelphia PA - Declaration of Independence and Constitution signed here • FDR Memorial - in Washington, DC has 4 rooms for each of his presidential terms of office • Vietnam Veterans Memorial - a Wall of Names of men and women who died in Viet Nam War • Mt.
