MIDDLE WESTERN REGION OF THE USA The Middle Western Region of the United States of America The twelve states in the Middle Western Region are Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. This region, often called "the heartland," is located in the center of the United States. It is known for its level land and fertile soil that produce wheat, corn, and oats. The Plains States that produce wheat are nicknamed "The Bread basket of the United States." Other Interesting Information: Kansas is nicknamed the "Sunflower State." The country north of the Middle Western Region is Canada. Rapidly moving and destructive windstorms known as tornados are common in this region. The man born in Kentucky who was President during the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln.
