LIVING AND NONLIVING THINGS What is a LIVING thing? If something is LIVING - it is ALIVE! • A plant is a living thing. • An animal is a living thing. • YOU are a living thing. These are living things: a tree a cat a person What can living things do? 1. Living things can grow. When you are born, you are a little baby. As you get older, you grow bigger and bigger. 2. Living things can have babies or make new plants. Living things can have babies. Example: A cat can have kittens. New plants can grow from the seeds of other plants. 3. Some living things can move. How do animals move? Animals use their body parts to move around. Why do animals move? • Animals move around to get food to eat. They need food to live. • Animals move to get the water they need to live. • Animals can move away from other animals that might hurt them. What do living things need? What do plants need to live? • Plants need water. • Plants need sunlight. • Plants need the air around them. • Plants need room to grow. A plant is a producer. A producer is a living thing that can MAKE its own food! What do animals need to live? • Animals need to eat food. • Animals need water to drink. • Animals need their own space to live in. • Animals need a place to live that will keep them safe. An animal is a consumer. A consumer is a living thing that eats other living things in order to live. What is a NONLIVING thing? What is the difference between living and nonliving things? • Living things CAN grow. • Nonliving things CAN’T grow. Example: A kitten will grow bigger, into an adult cat. A rock can’t grow at all. • Living things NEED to eat. • Nonliving things DO NOT need to eat. Example: Animals need to eat food so they can live.
