ELECTRICITY What is Electricity? Electricity is a form of energy. Electricity is what makes our TVs, radios, digital clocks, refrigerators, ovens, and lights work! Where does electricity come from? Electricity is created in large factories called power plants. Power plants use natural resources from the Earth to create electricity. Coal, natural gas, and oil are all natural resources found on Earth that are used to produce electricity in power plants. How is electricity made? Let’s use a coal power plant for our example. 1. In a coal power plant, coal is burned. 2. Heat is then created by the burning coal, which heats up water that is stored in the power plant. 3. When the water is heated to a very hot temperature, steam is created. 4. The steam then makes large blades on a large machine turn very quickly. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. 5. The turning of the blades on the large machine creates electricity! Electricity moves from power plants to our homes, schools, and other buildings through wires. Electricity travels through wires from one place to another. How do we use electricity? We use electricity to power many things around our houses and schools. Things that use electricity to work: lights to help you see in the dark the heat that warms your house your TV the microwave in your kitchen your Mom’s hairdryer your refrigerator Be Safe! Here are some important electrical safety tips to follow: Never touch an electrical outlet or plug. Never plug something into an outlet without the help of an adult. Never climb or play near telephone or electrical poles. Never put electrical cords or electrical toys near heat or water. Never pull on electric cords to unplug them. Never put your fingers in or play with a light bulb socket. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. Never use an electrical toy or appliance when you are wet. Always tell your parents about any electrical plugs or cords that are damaged. If you see an electrical wire that has fallen, stay away from it and tell an adult right away! Don't touch anyone or anything that is touching a fallen wire. What are some OTHER resources used to create electricity? Sunlight can be used to create electricity too! Solar power is created using energy from the Sun. Water can be used to create electricity too. You need a lot of water to create electricity though! Remember the coal power plant example? In a power plant that uses water to create electricity, water is used to turn the blades on the large machine instead of the steam that is used in the coal power plant. © Copyright NewPath Learning.
