THE SUN AND EARTH The Sun The Sun is a large hot ball of gas. It is also a star. The Sun is BIGGER than the Earth. Everything in our solar system moves around the Sun. The Sun is the center of our solar system. The Sun gives Earth light and heat. Living things need the Sun to live! The Sun is needed by plants to help them grow and make own food. Animals eat plants to get energy the plants got from the Sun. Don’t forget that too much sun can be bad for your skin because the Sun gives off harmful rays too. You should wear sun block when outside on a sunny day and sunglasses too to protect your eyes. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. Did you know? Sun rays shine on the moon at night which makes the moon bright! The Earth The Earth is the third planet from the Sun. Land and water cover the Earth but there is more water than land on Earth. Earth moves around the Sun in the solar system. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. Different places on Earth receive different amounts of sun rays this is why it is colder in New York during the winter than in Florida. Let’s check what we have learned so far: Why does the moon look bright at night? What causes day and night? As the Earth moves around the Sun it turns. This is called its rotation. Earth rotates ONCE each day. This rotation causes night and day here on Earth. The Sun lights one side of Earth at a time. When it is day on one side of the Earth, it is night on the other side. It is day on our side when the side of the Earth we live on is facing the Sun. Let’s check what we have learned so far: What causes day and night on Earth? © Copyright NewPath Learning. The Four Seasons There are four seasons: winter, spring, summer, and fall. What causes the seasons? Earth is tilted and goes around the Sun in one year’s time, so different places on Earth are closer and farther away from the Sun during different times of the year…causing us to have seasons on Earth. Winter is the coldest season. Summer is the warmest season. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. Fall is when some areas leaves on trees change color and fall off. Spring is when it starts to warm up after winter and new plants begin to grow.
