ESTIMATION Estimation is the process of rounding a number either up or down to the nearest place value requested. Estimation makes it easier to perform mathematical operations quickly. How to use estimation: • The rule for estimating numbers is based on what place value the number is to be rounded. Once it is determined what place value a number is to be rounded, look at the number to the right of the place value. If this number is 5 or higher, round up. If this number is 4 or below, round down. Example: Round 352 to the nearest hundred → 352 Check number to the right of hundreds place → 5 → round up →400 • If you are estimating when place value is not stated, round to the nearest ten if it is a two digit number, nearest hundred if a three digit number etc. When estimating cost, the cost is usually rounded to the nearest whole dollar. • Estimating can be done with word problems like commission, and also with finding the area, perimeter and circumference. Try this! 1. Estimate 464 to the nearest hundred. 2. Estimate 18% of 200. 3. Estimate the cost of two items that cost $1.83 each. 4. Estimate the area of a rectangle with a length of 54 and a width of 23. 5. Estimate how many pencils 22 children would get if there were 239 pencils in all. © Copyright NewPath Learning.
