PROBABILITY What is probability? Probability is the measure of how likely an event is. Total ways a specific outcome will happen Total number of possible outcomes The probability of event A is the number of ways event A can occur divided by the total number of possible outcomes. Example: A spinner has 4 equal colored sections; yellow, blue, green, and red. After spinning the spinner, what is the probability of landing on each color? The possible outcomes are yellow, blue, green, and red. Use the formula to determine the probability of landing on each color: Probabilities Number of chances to land on yellow P(yellow) = total number of colors = 1 4 Number of chances to land on blue P(blue) = total number of colors = 1 4 Number of chances to land on green P(green) = total number of colors = 1 4 Number of chances to land on red P(red) = total number of colors = 1 4 Probability = © Copyright NewPath Learning. Try This! 1. A glass jar contains 6 red, 5 green, 8 blue and 3 yellow marbles. If a single marble is chosen at random from the jar, what is the probability of choosing a red marble? a green marble? a blue marble? a yellow marble? 2. A single 6-sided die is rolled. What is the probability of each outcome? © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. Permission is granted for the purchaser to print copies for non-commercial educational purposes only.
