NUMBER LINE Using Negative Numbers and Fractions in a Number Line A number line is a line that shows any group of numbers in their least to greatest value. If a number is to the left of a number on the number line, it is less than that number. If it is to the right then it is greater than that number. Here is an example. On this number line, the 5 has the greatest value because it is all the way on the right side. The 1 has the smallest value because it is all the way on the left side. You can show fractions on a number line, too. Fractions are also shown from left to right, from least to greatest. Here is an example. 10 10 ½ 11 11 ½ 12 12 ½ 13 13 ½ 14 © Copyright NewPath Learning. Also, you can show negative numbers on a number line. Negative numbers are to go to the LEFT of zero on a number line, showing that they are less than zero. Positive numbers are to go to the RIGHT of zero, because they are greater in value than zero. As the negative numbers continue to go left on the number line, they decrease in value. Here is an example. The numbers increase in value as they go towards the right, away from the zero. The numbers to the left of the zero decrease in value as they go away from the zero.
