READING, WRITING, COMPARING, AND ORDERING DECIMALS What Is Reading, Writing, Comparing and Ordering Decimals? • Reading decimals means being able to state the place value of each digit in a decimal. • Writing decimals means being able to write the decimal in written form or numerical form. • Ordering decimals means listing the decimals from least to greatest, or greatest to least. • Comparing decimals means looking at the values of two decimals and deciding if they are greater than, less than, or equal to each other. • Two symbols are used in comparing decimals. < (less than) and > (greater than). © Copyright NewPath Learning. How to Read, Write, Compare, and Order Decimals: To Read and Write decimals, remember a decimal point means and. • Also, take note of the correct place of the last digit in the number. • Look to see if there is a number to the left of the decimal; if so write it out. If there is no number to the left of the decimal, skip to next step. • Write an and for the decimal point. • Write out the number to the right of the decimal. Do not yet include the place value. • Determine the place value of the last digit to the right of the decimal. Write the place value. Example: 12.25 is written and said ‘twelve and twenty five hundredths.’ Three and six tenths’ is 3.6. To Order decimals, compare the numbers. Then list the decimals from least to greatest or greatest to least. Example: 8.2, 8.25, 8.29, 8.35 To Compare decimals, line up the decimal points, start at the left and find the first place where the digits are different.
