TEMPERATURE What Is Temperature? • Temperature is the measure of how hot or cold something is. • Temperature is how the weather is measured. • Temperature is measured with a thermometer. • Temperature is measured in degrees Celsius (ºC) or degrees Fahrenheit (ºF). How to find the temperature: • The liquid in a thermometer grows bigger when heated and gets smaller when cooled. The only way the liquid can go is up or down. Therefore, the hotter it is, the further up the thermometer the liquid goes and the colder it is, the lower the liquid in the thermometer. For example: Both of these thermometers show temperatures in degrees Fahrenheit. The thermometer on the left shows 80ºF while the thermometer on the right shows 35ºF. Since 80ºF is warmer than 35ºF, the liquid in the thermometer on the left is higher than the thermometer on the right. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. • Celsius is a part of the metric system. Measuring the temperature in degrees Celsius is very similar to measuring in degrees Fahrenheit. The only difference is the number of degrees. For example: The thermometer on the left shows 50ºF while the thermometer on the right shows 50ºC. Although the numbers are the same, the temperatures are not. Here the thermometer on the left is again showing 50ºF while the thermometer on the right is showing 10ºC. Now these two thermometers are showing the same temperature. © Copyright NewPath Learning.
