DETERMINE APPROPRIATE STANDARD OF UNITS What Are the Standards of Units? • When measuring objects or distances, there are certain measurements of length, distance, weight, and capacity that should be used. • There are customary standard of units and metric standard of units. How to determine the standard of units: • When measuring length or distance, units such as inches, feet, yards, and miles are used in customary measurement. Millimeters, centimeters, meters, and kilometers are used in metric measurement. • When measuring weight, the customary measurements are ounces, pounds, and tons. The metric measurements for weight are milligrams, grams, and kilograms. • The customary measurements for measuring capacity are teaspoons, tablespoons, fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons.
