THREE-DIGIT ADDITION What Is Three-Digit Addition? Adding large numbers involves breaking the problem down into smaller addition facts. How to add three-digit numbers: 1. Place one number above the other. 2. Line up the hundreds, tens, and ones places. 3. Draw a line under the bottom number. 4. Add the ones place digits. If this number is larger than 10, place a one above the tens place column and place the ones digit below the line in the ones place column. 5. Add the tens place digits and place the answer below the line and in the tens place column (regroup if needed). 6. Add the numbers in the hundreds place column and place the hundreds sum below the line and before the other number below the line. If there was regrouping, place the 1 above the thousands place column. 7. The thousands place column only has a 1 in it which should be placed below the line in the thousands place column.
