EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS OF ½ • Fractions that are equivalent to ½ are fractions that have different denominators than ½, but still show half. • Fractions that are equivalent to ½ can be simplified to ½. • Fractions equivalent to ½ have an even number as their denominator. How to figure out fractions equivalent to ½: • When a fraction has a denominator that is a number other than two, look to see if it is an odd or even number. • If the denominator is an odd number, the fraction cannot be equivalent to ½. For example: Look at 2/5. The denominator (5) is an odd number. In order for this fraction to show ½, the numerator would need to be half of 5. Half of 5 is 2.5 or 2 ½. Since you cannot have a decimal in a fraction or a fraction within a fraction, 5 cannot be a denominator in a fraction equivalent to ½. • If the denominator is an even number, look to see if the numerator is half of the denominator. One way to figure this out is to multiply the numerator by two. If the answer is the number in the denominator, then the fraction is equivalent to ½. For example: Look at 3/6. The denominator is an even number. Now take the numerator (3) and multiply it by 2. Since 3 x 2 = 6, this means 3 is half of 6. Therefore, 3/6 is equivalent to 1/2! © Copyright NewPath Learning.
