THREE-DIGIT SUBTRACTION What Is Three-Digit Subtraction? We subtract to compare numbers. We are able to find the difference between numbers through subtraction. We use subtraction to find out how much more we have or how much smaller something is in comparison to another number. How to subtract three-digit numbers: Line up the three digit numbers so that the ones, tens, and hundreds digits are directly in line with each other. Be sure to place the larger number on top. Draw a line under the bottom number. Subtract the bottom digit in the ones' place column from the top number. If you cannot, borrow one from the tens' place to make the top value larger than the bottom value. Place the answer below the line in the ones' place column. Subtract the numbers in the tens' place column. Borrow one from the hundreds' place to make the top value bigger than the bottom value, if it is not. Place the difference below the line in the tens' place column. Subtract the digits in the hundreds' place column. Trade if necessary. Place the answer below the line in the hundreds' place column.
