PARTS OF SPEECH What Is a Part of Speech? A part of speech refers to the function that a particular word plays in a sentence. The eight parts of speech are: noun, verb, adjective, adverb, conjunction, interjection, preposition and pronoun. Examples: • Noun-name of a person, place, thing, or idea • Verb-expresses action or a state of being • Adjective-modifies a noun or a pronoun • Adverb-modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb • Conjunction-joins words or groups of words • Interjection-expresses emotions • Preposition-relates a noun or a pronoun to another word in the sentence • Pronoun-takes the place of a noun(s) Try This! 1] What part of speech is in italic print?
