MODIFIERS-ADJECTIVES What is an Adjective? A word that describes a noun or a pronoun is called an adjective. Modify means to change. Since adjectives change the meanings of nouns and pronouns, adjectives are also called modifiers. Examples: • Adjectives formed from proper nouns are called proper adjectives. Proper adjectives are describing words that are always capitalized. The Puerto Rican flag has the same colors as the American flag. • When two items or people are being compared, the comparative form of the adjective is used. When three or more items or people are being compared, the superlative form of the adjective is used. sweet sweeter sweetest • Compound adjectives are separated by hyphens. My great-grandmother is approaching ninety years of age. • Sometimes, a participle acts as an adjective Running, Juan hurried home to tell his older brother the good news. • In the following sentence, intelligent is a predicate adjective.
