VOCABULARY Your vocabulary is made up words that you know how to pronounce, know the correct meaning of, and know how to use properly in a sentence. Your vocabulary includes many kinds of words such as adjectives, adverbs, along with other parts of speech. What is an Adjective? An adjective describes a noun. Example: The frightened cat ran away from the dog. What is an Adverb? An adverb is a word that describes or modifies a verb. An adverb gives you more information about a verb and tells when, where, how, and to what extent. An adverb often ends in –ly. Examples: Brian ran quickly across the field. I went to the park yesterday. Your vocabulary may also include words that have similar or opposite meanings. Synonyms and Antonyms Synonyms are words that have similar meanings. Example: Brave and courageous are synonyms. Learning synonyms for words you use often in your writing can make your writing MORE exciting! Antonyms are words that mean the opposite of each other. Example: True and false are antonyms. What are Homographs? A homograph is a word that has MORE than one meaning. Examples: nail: something you hit with a hammer into wood I hit the nail into the wall with a hammer. nail: part of your fingers and toes I broke the nail on my pinky finger when playing basketball. coat: a layer of paint We painted two coats of paint onto the living room wall. coat: an article of clothing you wear when it is cold outside I put on my winter coat because it was snowing outside. © Copyright NewPath Learning.
