SENTENCE PURPOSE IDENTIFICATION Identifying a Topic Sentence A topic sentence is an introduction to a paragraph that expresses the main idea of the paragraph. A topic is usually the FIRST sentence in a paragraph. Identifying a Supporting Sentence A supporting sentence SUPPORTS the main idea of the paragraph. Supporting sentences contain specific details that help describe and develop the main idea of the paragraph. Supporting sentences can be found after the topic sentence in a paragraph; they make up the BODY of the paragraph. A supporting sentence should: • Support the main idea of the paragraph • Fit context AND flow of paragraph Identifying a Concluding Sentence A concluding sentence wraps up what was talked about in the paragraph.
