LITERARY ELEMENTS AND POETIC DEVICES What is Onomatopoeia? Onomatopoeia is a word that imitates the sound of that word. Examples: hiss boom thump bang What is Alliteration? Alliteration is the repetition of initial consonant sounds in a sentence, phrase, or poem. Example: Frank forged from the forest fiery as a furnace. What is Personification? Personification is the act of giving an animal, object, or idea human like qualities. Examples: The screaming alarm startled the entire family. (scream = human ability given to clock) The sun kissed the sky. (kiss = human quality given to the sun) What is Hyperbole? Hyperbole is the use of an exaggerated or overstated comparison. Example: My backpack weighs a ton. (the backpack and ton are being compared) This hyperbole is used to dramatically state how heavy the backpack felt. © Copyright NewPath Learning. What are Similes? A simile is a figure of speech in which two different things are compared, using the words LIKE or AS. Examples: Her smile was as pretty as a sunset. Similes often create pictures in the reader’s mind. You can use similes to make your writing more interesting. What is a Metaphor? A metaphor is a figure of speech that compares two unlike things WITHOUT using the words like or as. Example: She is sunshine. Rhyming Two words that have a similar sound rhyme. Example: Explain and sane rhyme. Repetition Repetition is the act or process of repeating. You can use repetition in your poetry by repeating words, phrases, or sounds. Example: I missed the bus but the sun continued to shine. My best friend was absent today but the sun continued to shine. I had to walk home but the sun continued to shine.
