VOCABULARY What is Vocabulary? Vocabulary is a list, collection, or group of words that are known by someone. Your vocabulary is all the words you know how to pronounce, what they mean, and how to use them in a sentence too. Over time, your vocabulary grows in number, which means you learn more words as you get older! Your vocabulary includes many kinds of words such as adjectives, adverbs, synonyms, antonyms, and even homographs. What is an Adjective? An adjective is a word that describes a noun. Example: The frightened cat ran up the crooked staircase. Frightened and crooked are adjectives. The word frightened describes the cat and the word crooked describes the staircase in the sentence above. Count the adjectives: How many adjectives are in the following sentence? The aged boat floated upon the calm, peaceful water. Did you find 3 adjectives? If you did, you found all the adjectives in the sentence! What is an Adverb? An adverb is a word that describes or modifies a verb. An adverb gives you more information about a verb. An adverb often ends in –ly but doesn’t always. An adverb tells when, where, how, and to what extent: Example of an adverb that tells when: She is coming over today. Example of an adverb that tells where: Put your backpack over there. Example of an adverb that tells how: The cow walked slowly across the field. Example of an adverb that tells to what extent: The monkey climbed the tree very fast. What is a Synonym? Synonyms are words that have nearly the same or very similar meanings. Example: Pretty and beautiful are synonyms. What is a synonym for answer? Answer: solution What is an Antonym? What is a Homograph? A homograph is a word that has multiple meanings. Examples: well: Sam did not feel very well after eating six pieces of pizza. well = healthy Grandma gets her water from a well. well = hole in ground that contains water fair: The rules of the game were fair. fair = just, reasonable My sister has fair skin, so she often gets sunburned during the summer. fair = light We rode every ride at the fair on Saturday. fair = carnival type event Try This!
