TOPIC SENTENCES A topic sentence is usually, but not always, the first sentence in a paragraph. A topic sentence is an introduction to a paragraph. It summarizes what the paragraph is written about. A topic sentence expresses the main idea of the paragraph. Example: Dogs make wonderful pets. Dogs are easily trained. You can teach a dog many tricks. Many dogs are friendly. Dogs can protect you from strangers. Dogs keep you company at all times and will always be your friend.
