PARTS OF SPEECH NOUNS A noun is a person, place, or thing. Singular nouns: Only ONE person, place, or thing. Examples: dog, tooth, hat, man Plural nouns: More than ONE person, place, or thing. Examples: dogs, teeth, hats, men Possessive nouns: Nouns that show ownership Example: My sister’s backpack was on the porch. VERBS A verb is a word that shows action or being. Examples of action verbs: run, jump, laughing Examples of being verbs: am, was, be Regular verbs: Regular verbs are verbs that we can simply add –ed to the end of the verb to make it past tense. Example: work worked Irregular verbs: Irregular verbs are a little more difficult to change to the past tense. Examples: see saw bring brought feel felt Verb Tenses There are many verb tenses. Here are three common verb tenses: Past tense (happened in the PAST) Example: I watched a movie yesterday. Present tense (is happening NOW) Example: I am watching a movie right now. Future tense (will happen in the FUTURE) Example: I will watch a movie tomorrow. Subject / Verb Agreement The subject of a sentence is the person, place, thing, or idea that the sentence is about. What is Subject/Verb Agreement? Singular subjects need singular verbs. Example: The man is looking at his watch. Plural subjects need plural verbs. Example: The men are looking at their watches. So the SUBJECT must agree with the VERB in a sentence. PRONOUNS A pronoun takes the place of a noun. Examples of pronouns: he, she, it, they, them, me, I, you, we, us © Copyright NewPath Learning. ADJECTIVES An adjective describes a noun or a pronoun. Common Adjective Common adjectives are regular adjectives that describe a noun or pronoun. Example: We moved into a friendly neighborhood.
