Similes compare two things that are not alike but are similar in one particular way. Authors use similes to make their writing more exciting. Example: Mitch ran like a rocket during the race and finished in first place. ‘Mitch’ and ‘rocket’ are being compared in this sentence. Mitch is not a rocket but he is being compared to a rocket since he ran so fast during the race. What is a Metaphor? A metaphor is a figure of speech that compares two things WITHOUT using words of comparison such as like or as. Metaphors are also used to describe something. Metaphors also compare two things that are not alike but are similar in one particular way. Authors use metaphors to make their writing more exciting. Example: My brother is a pig. He ate the entire pizza all by himself. ‘Brother’ and ‘pig’ are being compared in the first sentence.
