UNNECESSARY INFORMATION What is Unnecessary Information? When you write a paragraph, story, or report you must include all important information. Sometimes writers put in too much information. It is important to know what to include and what to leave out. The unnecessary information is any part that does not belong. Example: If you are writing sentences, you might have a word or two that does not belong. Find the unnecessary information in the following. 1. I went to to the store with my mother. (The word to is written twice.) 2. We have went to that city many times. (Went does not need the helper have.) Example: When writing a paragraph, you try to keep to the topic. Read the paragraph and decide which sentence does not keep to the topic. I have a funny little dog. He likes to play with me and with other dogs. He likes to watch TV with me. In the car, he likes to sit with the driver. I will drive a car when I am sixteen. ‘I will drive a car when I am sixteen’ does not go with the topic about having a funny little dog. Try this! Find the unnecessary information. 1. Do you like those there apples? 2. I live in the state of New York State. 3. I am going to Florida in a jet plane. I have never flown before. It will be exciting to look out the window and see the land below me. A helicopter is a kind of plane. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved.
