Roots - parts of a plant that take in nutrients and water from the soil. Leaves - the parts of a plant that make the food. Stems - parts of plants that move water and nutrients from the roots to the rest of the plant. Nutrients - nourishment for a plant made from decaying leaves and animals in soil. Germination - the process of a seed growing into a plant Erosion - the process in which wind, rain, ice, and water break down rocks into soil. Wind - air that is moving Thermometer - a tool to measure heat and cold Water cycle - the movement of water from liquid to vapor and back to liquid through evaporation, condensation, and precipitation Condensation - gas changes to liquid Evaporation - liquid changes to a gas or a vapor Precipitation - water that falls to the earth as rain, sleet, snow or hail Matter - anything that takes up space and has mass. Balance - a tool to compare the mass of objects. Mass - amount of matter in an object. Star - a huge ball of super-hot gas. Our sun is a star. Planet - a solid, liquid, or gas body that orbits a star Gravity - a force on the earth that pulls on objects Orbit - the path of one object around another. Planets follow a path around the sun. Revolve - to make one trip around an object. A year is the time it takes a planet to make one revolution around the sun. Rotate - to move around an axis. It takes the earth 24 hours to make one rotation around its axis. Axis - an imaginary line through the earth from the top (North Pole) to the bottom (South Pole) Solar system - any star and all the objects that orbit it. The sun, planets, and asteroids are a solar system. Constellation - a group of stars that seem to form a pattern or picture in the sky. Mammal - a warm blooded animal with fur or skin that produces live babies. (human, horse, dog) Reptile - cold blooded animal with scales. Reptiles lay eggs. (lizard, snake, dinosaur) Amphibian - an animal that lives in water during its early stages and on land as an adult.
