PAST TENSE What is Past Tense? Past tense means something happened in the past. It could be many years ago, yesterday, or just a few minutes ago. Verbs change in special ways to show past tense. Most verbs that tell about the past end in ed. Example: look - looked, want - wanted If a verb ends in e, to make the past tense, you drop that e, then add ed. Example: hope - hoped If a verb has one vowel followed by one consonant, you double the consonant before adding ed. Example: hop - hopped. Some verbs change to a new form as a plural.
