ADD THE ING SUFFIX How do you add the ING suffix to verbs? We add -ing to many verbs. But to spell them correctly, you need to remember the rules. Here are some rules to help you. 1. Usually just add the ing at the end of a verb. Example: walk - walking, sing - singing, sail -sailing 2. If the verb ends in silent e, drop the e then add -ing. Example: hope - hoping, take - taking 3. If the verb has a short vowel and ends in one consonant, double the consonant before adding the ing.
