MATTER ALL AROUND What is Matter? Not WHAT is the matter what IS matter? Matter is all around you. Matter is anything that takes up space. Mass is the amount of matter in an object. It is how much stuff an object is made of. Let’s check what we have learned so far: What is matter? Three States of Matter Matter can be solid, liquid, or gas. These are the three states of matter. Solid A solid takes up space. A solid has its own shape. A solid’s shape will not change. Liquid A liquid also takes up space. A liquid can change its shape. A liquid takes the shape of whatever it is poured into…like a glass. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. Gas A gas takes up space. You can’t see most gases. A gas can change size and shape. A gas takes the size and shape of what is holding it. WATER - in ALL three states of matter: solid = ice cube liquid = glass of water gas = water vapor Let’s check what we have learned so far: Describe some features of a liquid. © Copyright NewPath Learning. Matter Can Change Matter can be changed. Example: When you cut paper in half using scissors. Liquid can change into a solid: Water, a liquid, which is placed in a freezer will freeze into ice, a solid. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. Solids can change into a liquid: An ice cube, a solid, can melt into a puddle of water, a liquid. Heat melts the ice causing it to change states. A liquid can change into a gas: Heat can cause water to change into a gas too if you boil water, the water, which is a liquid, will change into water vapor, which is a gas. The sun can cause water in a puddle to evaporate. Evaporate means to change from a liquid to a gas (water vapor). You can even mix solids and liquids together: water with ice cubes in it. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. Dissolving Some solids will dissolve in liquid. Dissolve means to break into tiny pieces so small so that the pieces can not be seen any longer. Salt dissolves in water. Another Kind of Change One last example of matter changing is when wood burns it changes from wood into ashes, which is a different kind of matter than the wood. Let’s check what we have learned so far: Give one example of how a solid can change into a liquid. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved.
