NATIVE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED STATES Who were the Native People? “Native” means the people who originally lived in this land. There are many Native American tribes, each with their own unique way of life. Over the years, these tribes have lived in different places and some have learned how to survive in harsh climates. CHEROKEE • located in southeast • U.S. government forced them to get off their land and march many miles. Many died. This is called the “Trail of Tears.” • Created beadwork and pottery TLINGIT • located on coast of Alaska • relied on sea and forest • caught salmon, shellfish • carved wooden totem poles, canoes, masks The raven was a symbol of the trickster in Tlingit culture. HOPI • located in desert Southwest • used traditional methods to grow corn • ate corn, beans, squash IROQUOIS • 6 nations make up the Iroquois Confederacy: o Cayuga o Mohawk o Oneida o Onondaga o Seneca o Tuscarora • Located in Eastern Woodlands • Haudenosaunee means People of the Longhouse • The Three Sisters were the major crops: corn, beans, and squash • Sometimes they traded beaver pelts for metal items like guns, axes, knives, hoes, or pots LAKOTA OF THE PLAINS (Western Sioux) • located in North and South Dakota • they relied on the buffalo for food, clothing, housing, and tools • women made beadwork and quillwork, which uses porcupine quills © Copyright NewPath Learning.
