AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY • 1619: First slave ship comes to Jamestown from Africa. Slavery continued in some parts of the country until 1859. o Millions of slaves worked on plantations in the South. • 1820: Harriet Tubman is born as a slave. She later leads many slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad. • 1852: Harriet Beecher Stowe writes Uncle Tom’s Cabin. • 1857: Supreme Court rules that an African American cannot be a citizen of the U.S. (Dred Scot Case) • 1862: Emancipation Proclamation given by Abraham Lincoln frees the slaves. • 1865: Thirteenth Amendment is ratified. • 1909: NAACP is formed. (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) • 1920s: Harlem Renaissance—many black poets, writers, and artists had lots of success. • 1936: Jesse Owens, an African American track star, won 4 gold medals at the Berlin Olympics. • 1954 Brown v. Board of Education. Supreme Court decided that segregation of schools is not Constitutional. • 1955: Rosa Parks would not give up her seat in a bus to a white man. This led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Because African Americans were so upset by the arrest of Rosa Parks, they refused to ride any buses. • 1957: Congress passed the Civil Rights Act to protect the rights of African Americans. • 1963: Martin Luther King, Jr. gives his “I have a dream” speech to a huge crowd. • 1965: African Americans wanted the right to vote.
