EXTRANEOUS DETAILS What are Extraneous Details? Extraneous details are details that are irrelevant to the main idea of a paragraph. Extraneous details are details that are not necessary to include in a paragraph because they are NOT related to the theme of a paragraph. Extraneous details should NOT be included in your writing. Example: Megan was having the perfect day. Her Mom made her favorite breakfast, she got the best seat on the bus, and she even got an A on her Math Test. Megan was in 5th grade. If all those things weren’t great enough, she also was given an extra dessert at lunch and her best friend gave her an early birthday present. Megan couldn’t have been happier. What is the extraneous fact in the above paragraph? The extraneous detail in the paragraph was the mention of Megan being in 5th grade.
